Thanks K - that was one of the few I didn't bother to check in Chambers! Better get some jobs done now!

Hello Sudokulover - I found it such a satisfying puzzle today. I was afraid to look at this thread until I'd finished it, but I was lucky, and inspiration came quite quickly. Some lovely clues.

Good Afternoon AJT.

I agree.A very pleasant stroll down memory lane.
I got the song very early on when a certain word in 7d just jumped out at me.
Sorry you had a bit of upset first thing.
Cheers K

Hi, K. I was lucky in that line 2 popped out right away,, and the rest, not easy as they say, but delightful.
I do think it's a shame when these - shall we call them cult - puzzles have the answers displayed too early. It seems to be generally accepted on this site that say, the Radio Times xword is sacrosanct, and no answers given early on. It's all very well to say don't look at the thrad, but there are those of us who like to greet familiar names and comment on the puzzle, without giving the answers away. I do take the point that this is indeed a help forum, but one can help by elaborating on the clue rather than giving the answer. Sorry to be long-winded.

Thank you Jim C for your instructions to download this devilishly difficult crossword. I had been following the weekly comments and suggestions generated by the clues and thinking perhaps that I'd like to give it a go. Now I know! This is definitely out of my league.
Cheers

Welcome kookaburra!

Don't give up. You Aussies are known for your grit. We all have to start somewhere. Took me a while.

You can get a clearer grid by Googling "spectator crossword 197x" (this was 1971, increments weekly) and find the forum at
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk

Look for mintyman99 (a green gremlin) He posts the exact link, e.g.:
http://www.spectator....6112333/crossword.pdf
Much easier to print. Usually available after 08:00 GMT Thursday.

Come back soon. (Canada time now 22:15)

Thanks Zardoz. I welcome a challenge. Thanks for all the extra information as I need all the help I can get.
It's 3.44pm here in the Sunshine State. Time to get cracking with the Spectator crossword, I think.
Regards

Would someone be kind enough to give me a hint on 41a? I'm thinking this may be a word that is not in my rather old Chambers (I could buy the latest version but I set out to win one & am holding on to the dream for a little while longer!)
