Am puzzled by 34a 'Japanese fish absorbs tar intermittently (6, two words). It seems the answer is 'A Salti' but I don't get it. Many thanks if you can help explain.

A salti - intermittently

Ai - Japanese fish
Salt - tar/sailor

The rubric mentions 4 letters omitted from the wordplay and, although it doesn't affect the final grid, I wondered if you could give me the other two after M (4a) & D 35a?

Hello K - I answered that this morning on another thread - M M D C. I'm pretty sure that's right, but I can't see the significance.

MMDC = 2600 (Mephisto number).
