Midge's steer won't help. It's a word for pass followed by a "member" followed by an anagram of 2 other words in the clue.
Any help with these would be appreciated:
1 Obscure poet holds nothing to write on (10)
20 Eggs on administrative official for the independent school (7)
24 Why I went with all to represent his jocular schoolmaster (2,6)
40 Lecturing in a particular part of Berkshire (7) can't be Reading surely?

24. Why + I + All gives an old time actor and then you need a role he played.

Any hints available please for:

16.....but this language is appropriate when English is not available (6)

44. ....for cheating in bed with singer! (8)

16a: A word meaning "appropriate" minus "e" (for English) will give the name of a language.

Thanks so much elle. Went through loads of synonyms for appropriate until I hit the right one.

Are the.......part of the clue? They usually mean that this clue is connected to the previous one.

Sometimes the.......mean the next question follows on but not in this case. Thanks for your help - you can kick yourself when the answer is so obvious but you've just not thought along the right lines.

99. Use the word 'pathetic' minus the first of History and it begins with a four letter word for fairy.
