I've finished but the second square of 20d/23a bothers me. For the answers to the clues it has to be an O, but for the shading at the end it needs to be a U.

It's more likely that I am wrong, rather than the puzzle, but I don't see how!

I think you should be taking the U from the last letter of 8D...or second letter of 20A

Good - once you've got a few, the scene of the action is obvious. And just in case... remember it's the incorrect letters that you use!

I have the 4 additional words, the 11 misprinted letters and the 30 shaded cells but am, annoyingly, stuck on 27d:
' Baud admits no prisoners (5)' - the 'u' is the misprinted letter. I have ?ESS?
Also unsure about 1a and 2d which is:
'Ance, no guid rubbish from laird playing with gues (5)' The C in 'ance' is the misprint here.
I guess it's an anagram of laird and gues minus guid? I have
??LES so LARES or ARLES?
Any help gratefully received!

I mean RALES or ARLES for 2d lol!

27 D. You need a heraldic baNd.
The C becomes a T, leading to Arles working as the answer.

PS. I felt some of these clues were slightly odd. My answers could be wrong!
