I think this must be using "cardinal" in a way I don't know:

26a Begged priest and cardinal to welcome a young leader (6).
-r-y-d. Prayed, I assume. Pr = priest, a and y from "a young leader", how does "ed" become cardinal?

It's using P for 'priest', and 'cardinal' is red.
