"Lights" are the white squares where you write your answers into a crossword

My Chambers gives a definition of "light" as "in a crossword, the word (or sometimes an individual letter in the word) on the diagram that is the answer to a clue." It can also just mean "a hint, clue or help towards understanding"

Mmmm - for a word that we all use frequently, its meaning is somewhat slippery!
