ixion helped me see the light on 32d, but we're both wondering about 1a being spelled with 2 "L"s.

Chambers shows 2 L's.

Just found it in Brewers:
Borstall (A.S. beork, a hill, and steall, place, or
stigol, stile).

Thanks Zardoz - don't have a Brewers either - did find it online though - should come in handy to curtail my many ignorant postings!

This is by way of a PS, as I've just picked up the thread. On a quick run through, I don't think that anyone has mentioned that Chambers gives both spellings - Borstal and Borstall
