I went for FREE too, but I think it's a weak clue (if that's the answer, of course!)

Another one I don't like is 4d
Cattle drive (5)
The answer is obvious, but isn't the first word always plural and the answer singular? Also the second definition is a bit loose too!

Yes, it is plural Chris but I suppose one could be excused thinking it could be used like deer! The second definition came up first in my thesaurus.

1a seemed over complicated.

22a was a new word for me but I found it with the crossers.

Overall, I thought this was pretty easy for a prize crossword.

Thanks jack - a bit late for me.

Lorenzo Monaco is fascinating. There's a little upstairs gallery in the Accademia in Florence that has several. They are not Gothic (like Giotto, for instance), but they are not yet Renaissance - you can almost see art history developing!
