These aren't coming to me at present:-
4 Across - "Back problem one resident gets" (5) (--I--)
4 Down - "Inga soldiers on after third fine" (5) (--E-T)
6 Down - "Creep read a short tale without thanks" (5)

(this may well be "SIDLE" , which is possibly "SAID" minus the "A" + "TALE" minus "TA")
12 Down - "Detailed part of song verse" (3) (O--)
(ODE I imagine, but don't quite get it)
16 Across - "Swimmers stand around in front" (6) (--A---)
16 Down - "Bore through with reading missed a story^ (5)
(--E-E)
Also, with regard to 1 Across, the clue is "Fly - tailless adult
insect" and the answer is "FLEA" . Where does the "E"
of "FLEA" come into the clue?

Thanks to one and all! 4 Across is "GAINS" ("I" inside of "SNAG " reversed)
PLAICE" is correct. This is "PLACE" around "I" (first letter of "IN")
