51a Roman items are sent back in rubber (6) - ERASER (Rubber)

No one else seems to have problems with this so I think it's just me being a bit more slow than usual. I can see ERa (Are 'Sent back') but that leaves SER for 'Roman items' which has me stumped.

PS. Did this site go offline for anybody else from about about 04:00 - 04:11(Even saying Usernames and/or Passwords were incorrect?)

It's OK, cancel that. I thing the RES part of the clue (era)SER reversed means:-

res
n, pl res
a thing, matter, or object

This would account for the 'Items' part that had me stumped. Thanks anyway.

RES is a thing or things, so it would be 'res are', all reversed.

Thanks Mattrom, It's amazing how often I/one spends fruitlessly trying to make sense of a clue only to figure it out within about a minute of posting the query on here.

Seems answer must be 'mate' and I can get this as total clue for 'hand' and the T for 'first of These' ... But what has MAE to do with 'US college' please?
