Well I've been finding it hard to get going, so thanks to all who have given hints, especially 18d (never heard of him).
I shall battle on now I've got more letters.

I came across him in Dorothy Sayers - Lord Peter Wimsey referred to his half-french uncle as "Uncle .........."

I've finished but cannot parse a couple of my answers.
