Can anyone please parse 1d: Choose to reduce by a tenth halved and quartered. I am assuming it is decide on the basis that 16a is Dresden. Thanks in advance.

Decimate, reduce by half= Deci+ De(cimate), quartered, using only a quarter of the word?

...I think D (ecimat) E, quartered/gutted might work better.

Apologies Malone for late post- was out all day. Like you I get the "dec" bit but cant get "cide". It really is a strange clue!

Cedric, I'm not always very good at parsing, but I thought the Deci + De reasoning I gave earlier was ...ok. You don't need to get 'cide', surely?
