Just having a pop at this and need one letter! Two clues cross each other and need the same letter.
2 Down - "To betroth" (obs.) (4) A-SY
5 Across - "To put off" (archaic) (3) -UB
Cannot find hide nor hair of these words!

Thanks, Rossim - that'll probably do the trick. Where I've put the "S" in that word was crossing "DSC" which will now be "DFC" (a military decoration). But that'll make "to put off" FUB, so imagine that'll now be FOB in order to make sense.

It looks as if Elle's nailed Down "FUB" as a word, so I'll go along with that! I don't want to fub my reply, so thanks!

Chambers gives "fub" as being archaic - which the clue requested - and meaning to put off ; to fob.
