Going West means reversing the word OGRE to spell ERGO

Thanks Chrise and Film Fan. I'm not always this thoughtless!

I'm stuck on 1 down "revealed soldiers over the top" (*U***) and 10 across "large bird to take home, say" (***E).
Any clues please? Usually if I come back to it I'll see something else, but I've got nothing! Thanks.

10 was my last. It's an old word for type of large bird.
1d the definition is "over the top". Slightly unfair, as one might expect a foreign language indication.

I'm stuck on 1, 10, 17 and 24,.
