It looks like EVINCED - Vince (fellow) inside Ed (top journalist). But since when has evinced meant betrayed?

I took it mean 'betrayed' as in 'He betrayed (showed) his true feelings' - but given my previous attempt at parsing a clue, I'd wait for confirmation!
