I'm having trouble parsing these, help much appreciated.....

20a Character giving one thousand for another kitchen boiler (6) - KETTLE (Kitchen boiler)

14d Reason workforce finally left plant, unwanted? (9) - GROUNDSEL (Plant, unwanted)

I think 'Reason' might be GROUNDS, but that would leave EL for part of a word (finally left) meaning 'Workforce', so I think I've gone wrong.

20a character is METTLE.. Give M (thousand) for K (thousand)

20 Mettle would be character/strength etc, change M, Roman for 1000 to K, thousand (kilogram, kilometre etc).
14 the E is from 'workforce' (finally - last letter) and the L is Left. I think Grounds is ok for Reason, Rusty thought both should be plurals.

reason - grounds + final letter of workforce + L(left)
