Shako may well be a muted bronze gong, but it's not in Chambers! I think the definition in 17a is simply 'garment', which is weak to say the least. For 10d, the 'a' ending is correct - anag of palace + o (round) + i (in), but the definition part invites the answer alopecic (not given by Chambers but given, oddly, by Chambers Word Wizard).
I got the hang of this puzzle very quickly, thanks to an inspired guess for 19d, but thought it was unsatisfactory in lots of ways. I take it 41a is taws backwards, even though a taws is a strap, not a whip?
