De haut en bas, literally 'from high to low', or superciliously

Anagram of 'bashed a tune'

Thanks Mattrom, but I'm afraid to say I've never heard this expression in my entire life, I think my education has been sadly neglected.

I'm struggling with a couple in the bottom left corner.

43d Short story includes chapter on setter (8)

54a Upset monk, taking one of his tools (6)

B?T???

Thinking BITTER, but not parsing it.

54 Bother, trouble? Brother would be Monk, but I don't get how removing an 'r' is taking one of his tools.

Hi, Malone!
The clue should read "rooks ", not tools"- so just removing the "r" from "brother"!

Thanks all

Autocorrect must have changed rooks to tools, apologies for not checking.
