These two have me baffled. I thought "torrential" but can't parse. The second-last letter in 13D is the second letter in 24A. I'm fairly sure of the letters I have (BUT???).

13D. Thinner air around right inept mess (10) T?R?E?T???

24A. Tear-jerker appearing to one side (5) ???O?
