47 Down:- "Starter leaving taste that's more satisfying?"
Can only think of two words to fit and "AMBLER" would
seem to be more appropriate, bit cannot parse it. Help, please.

Ampler, more satisfying. Sampler would be the starter, remove the S.

Thanks, one and all! I knew that "SMILER" was a no-no, and had considered "AMBLER" to be the only other "fit". Not considered "AMPLER", so thanks!

"taste " in the clue gives "sample" - with the starter "s" missing , that gives "ample"...the comparative of which ("more " in the clue) leaves you with "ampler"
