Can anyone help parse 12a?
Read documents about over-throw of a ruler, north European (12)

I assume Scandinavian but about from 'scan' for 'read' I can't see why.

Read is scan
documents over is ID reversed giving di.
The ruler is Ivan, reversed.
A is in clue.
North is N
Scandinavian.

Thank you. I think I prefer witty word play clues to this sort of rather dry put this bit inside that bit, add another bit, reverse something, clue.
