I found that clue as tough as old bent

thanks Cerasus - I almost understand now. By the way, is it just me or is there a mistake in the clue for 44 across? One "S" to few in in the anagram "presidents go in car" for "pedestrian crossing"?

It appears to be missing an "S" . the anagram shows 17 and the grid 18 letters ?

Maybe a print/typo
"Presidents go in cars" would be better
