Think I've cracked it but am dubious about 8 ac.
Is Nick pen? Can't see what the repeated letter is ....

Nick is a synonym for steal. The last four letters are a definition for the last four words (that I've never heard of).

I've finished now except that I cannot parse 22A. Any help?

22 - had settled is the first 3 letters. I assume the last four letters are a game (I've never heard of) and it (without the t) goes before it - the definition being fight.

I got the first three letters too. Then I thought the repeated letters had to be consecutive. And I've never heard of any game like that either.

Perhaps 'had' = the last 3 letters, and 'settled' is the first 3?
