_ U _ S

Fret for vessel from the States (4)

Fuss means fret, but nothing to do with vessel.
Jugs fits, and that's a vessel, but nothing to do with fret.
Is the States US or just S ?
Subs is a vessel but nothing to do with fret.

These small words are often the hardest!

Advice please.....

If F could be "for", USS will do as "vessel from the United States" (United States Ship)

Thanks - it must be FUSS. I haven't come across the abbreviation for United States Ships before.

(I'm more familiar with it as "USS Enterprise", but in this case it stood for "United Space Ship")

I had the privilege of being escorted around the uss Enterprise (aircraft carrier) when it was moored at Palma de Mallorca . It was a courtesy visit so the sailors had to be on their best behaviour !
