This was answered earlier. The answer is Literal - the Liter is a 'volume of Alcott' as Alcott was an American author and Litre is Liter there.

It's LITERAL.

This caused me a few problems - apparently, Alcott is American so 'Volume' of LITRE changes to the american spelling of LITER + A L(ine)

How would Lateral work with the clue? I'm sorry, I just can't see that.

Granted Liter is the American spelling of our
litre, but. mispelt could be later adding on heading of
Alcott. equals. lateral (which suggests a LINE!)

Thanks, LITLUN, I can see how you can get it to fit - but it's a bit clunky (in my personal opinion!).
