Thanks Mamya, that was driving me mad. I'd convinced myself that 'In' referred to HIP, and so was tying myself up in knots trying to make sense of the rest.

19a Misprint in volume of Alcott heading a line (7) - LITERAL (Misprint)

I can A L(ine), but don't get the 'Alcott' part.

It's Ok, I think I've got it - it's an american spelling of 'Litre'.

Brendan, I think the setter is indicating the "American" author, Louisa May Alcott of Little Women fame.
Alcott would have "liter", not "litre".
The American volume is "liter" as opposed to our "litre".
I think!
