Can anyone clarify the special instructions please?

Seven theme clues need something done to them to reach the solution to be entered in the grid. I've got the "something" but I am not clear if it applies to the clue or to the apparent solution.

I have completed the crossword but I am not sure about the parsing for 16ac, 7dn and 18dn.
Any hints welcome.

16a The definition is the first word, I think the parsing is a little wobbly but just about works
7d Phonetic alphabet
17d Again definition is the first word

16 ac: the definition is better read as resumés. Take Take the first 5 letters of the answer and add "use" to get "obscure"
7dn: International radio code. It's the one p;rfeceding Italian for "pope".
18dn: reverse of UN + a word meaning "not stopping" with "on" and "in" removed. The definition is "pi", but it's not the Greek letter.

Why not just list all the answers? The OP asked for hints, plenty of people have completed the grid which was fairly straightforward. No need to show off your finesse.

I was trying to be helpful, but I apologise to griffin if I was too detailed. I didn't find it at all straightforward.

I was probably a bit harsh, it is difficult to know how much detail some people may want or need. My apologies. Even though it is a prize and I have been doing them for a considerable time does anybody ever send off in the vain hope of winning something. I know I never have and indeed don't even know what is up for grabs.

A couple of books for the prize and they weren't very exciting! Supposed to be worth £34.99 ....I didn't think so!
