Thank you everyone! I had the right word and now I know why!!! :-)

Very unhappy with this one. 12a answer and the "heavy drinker" element of 14d not in my current Oxford - had to go to my trusty 1950s dic to find them. Had to look up words beginning with EPE for 17a - very obscure. And I still don't get 11a - COMMAND = "Butterfly State"? Why?

A comma is a Butterfly.
ND is North Dakota, maybe?

I would also suggest that the star mentioned in 3d is not, in fact, a star. Sigh.
