19a : Go and fish in taxing place (8) I have -u-n-i--. I fancy it may be BURNSIDE Ide (fish) but cannot confidently parse the rest and it doesnt make sense !

The "tax" is to use a road - not the most accurate definition.

Ok see TURNPIKE ...but turnpike didnt turn up on crossword solver ( tried there first) ...how strange - should it be hyphenated ?

It's not usually hyphenated, I think. Chambers Word Wizard knows it, and as one word.

I have rechecked Crossword solver - doesnt recognise TURNPIKE so I have submitted it as a new word - ALWAYS wanted to do that ! Thanks for your help Hal

Actually, Hal, "Quick Solve" DID have "turnpike" as one of its words!
When I first read the exchange between yourself and Chris, I put in the crossers ??U?N?I?E
and it came up with a list, giving

Turnpike

1.noun - an expressway on which tolls are collected
2.(from 16th to 19th centuries) gates set across a road to prevent passage until a toll had been paid
