Hi bob should it not read ( coexist) not exist or is it my paper thats wrong, but I still don't know the answer anyway.

former mate is usually shown as "ex" in cryptic.
maybe complex ?

Providing I have done the puzzle correctly the only two words I have containing an X is Toxin and Quixotic. 5 letters from coexist do appear in quixotic but seems a bit thin lol.

Lol light bulb just appeared above my head. Answer is Stoic. Remove EX from coexist, and to be tough is Stoic
