14a is correct as far as you've gone. 'lit' is an anagrind.

for 14a ... put your letters into chambers word wizard ... not many choices ....you will spot the correct one immediately

I couldn't quite see why "Uncle Stalin" gave ASE, though.

It reminded me of an Everyman I did many years ago. It was an anagram, and I had UP TO HIS ???? IN IT. The letters left were A R S E.

I see that someone over on the Guardian website found 19d offensive to the extent that it detracted from the rest of the crossword for them. It IS Paul after all. Personally, I thought it a really good, albeit not too difficult, one today.
