I have finished it all except for 8A and 5D. I consider that there is only one solution for 5D, this being a comparative word for not pretty beginning with U (as in the pseudonym). But there is nothing that will then fit in 8A. Any hints, please?

8A is part of X's name Pendragon

Thanks folks, I'm not sure I would have got some of these without the hints given. Still don't understand 1dn too well but finished now.

1d plus 28d is what Y is famous for.

I have a completed grid which I'm pretty sure is correct but don't fully understand half a dozen clues, so not very satisfying. I'll wait until fifteensquared pronounces - he of all people should be able to put me straight.
While I'm waiting, can anyone tell me what 7d 20d has got to do with 3D, if that's the numerical connection?
