can anyone explain why the answer to 6 across should be 'ungag' which is the only word I know of which fits? UN could be united nations, but where does GAG fit in? thanks to anyone who can explain.

The clue has 'one' in it. One meaning of 'one', given in Chambers, is 'a joke'- joke/gag is then fine.
