Never come across raree in my life. Now that's thrown 'cloven' which I had for 25a (with 'split' and 'oleaceous' in the clue. Now - could it be the 'n' in cloven that's stopped me from getting 8d "watch female ruler holding gun - a pygmy, maybe". The "female" in the clue suggests 'gender' for the first word but after that I've got G-N-E-E-. That would then leave me with just 5a: "swimmer's angle on computer-aided teaching". Starts with C, and looks like it should be CAT .. and then the rest of the word wants to be "ling" (i.e. a fish).

I'm all over the place with this: any help might return me to sanity!
