Please can anybody help? I am stuck on
15a General left inside with group (7) -l-s-e-
16a Hear the confessions of learner and pucker up (7) -h-i-e-
(I have the words 'GLASSES'&'SHRIVEL' but am unable to prove it!)

You're right with shrivel - shrive is to take confession.
For the other think of unsuccessful US generals then narrow it down some.
