Just two to go - 38a "Prophet recalled receiving news in French city": I have R-N-E-. And 54a "Like Tantalus's daughter and grandmother, defending one with honour: N-O-E-N. Any help would be appreciated.

38 Rennes, French city. Seer, prophet, reversed (recalled) with NN, New(s).

NN - notes in SEER - prophet, backwards

... NN meant News in the plural, two x N for new.

ChrisE, did the clue have Notes rather than News? I'm slightly confused and don't have the paper to check.
