Anyone know 25 Across. He requires a down payment, reportedly.

We can only come up with Ernest but can someone tell me if this is correct and why?

Am also stuck on 10 Across - Attack from the air? Abandoning bridgehead, I'd move to first bunker.

Is this firebomb and if so why?

Think 10ac is DIVEBOMB (anagram of 'I'd move + 2 b's from bridgehead and bunker)

... and apparently an 'earnest' is an old name for a part payment.

ERNEST .. correct, I think, because the clue says "reportedly" and if you say (i.e. report) the word "Ernest" it sounds a bit like "a nest" - and a nest is inhabited by birds (which are covered in down). Hmmm .. maybe a bit tenuous.

Ernest & divebomb are correct. I'm stuck on
'Off in front, although it's banned' FORBADE fits which works with 'banned' but I can't see how it works witrh the rest of the clue.

We got forbade too but were not happy with the clue.

FORBADE .... BAD (off) in FORE (front), I think.
