I'd finished all bar two - 1d and 17ac. Your hints helped me get both. Like most of you I got the wrong adventurer for 9ac, but much happier with current answer.
I thought this was quite easy once I got the theme. My wonderful Chambers Complete Crossword Companion had an excellent list of the adventurers.

I no longer have my paper so don 't recall what the clue for 17 was
