21D:
I think this might be "Amiens" = Shakespearean lord
as I think there is a Lord Amiens in "As You Like it"?
Parsing........ mien - appearance
and presumably the play must begin with the word "As..."?
Sorry, but I am too lazy to lay my hands on my copy of Shakespeare's plays right now in order to check this out!

or on second thoughts... perhaps it means the "As" of the title of the play?
Maybe I am looking for complications that aren't there?

Gave in.......searched for my copy of Shakespeare...... the first word of the play itself is "As...", spoken by Orlando!
Goodness knows what the compiler of the crossword intended?

Mien is French for 'appearance', inside the 'As'.

Sorry, Elle, I didn't notice your earlier post with Mien = appearance!
