Seen my error - patent is the answer to another clue. I can see what the answer to this one is now.

The question is how to proceed after filling the grid. What has to be drawn and where?

I have exactly the same issue, but i also have a full grid and cant see what i have wrong then. Where did you find your erroneous patent clue? I also dont understand what the nine thematic answers are or what to highlight. Or why some answers are linked to others and some not. my down column between d and e looks right so i think I am nearly there..........

I have a full grid and confusion over the thematic items. To get from the end of clue 3 (at 5, 2 in x-y notation) to the start of clue 4 (at 2, 4), I need a ladder: okay, so far, so thematic. Similarly to get from the end of 19 (9, 11) to the start of 20 (8, 4), I need a snake, but I can see no path between those two cells that spells out an appropriate word. More worryingly, I only seem to need seven thematic items to get from start to finish.

Ah yes. I could not understand the wordplay to my answer there but fooled by it fitting 'sound system'. so, a swapover with 8a. Doesn't help me with the 9 items though. Maybe it will come to me after a break. Thanks.

carpox1, the letters the Ls and Ss are above don't matter. Your thematic sequence pauses at the start of the L/S and unpauses at the end. There are definitely 9 of them.
