Makarios' letters in retrospect please lowly workers(4)ETA? (the 'T' is from 'eluate', my answer to 2d What's inside membrane took in purified spirit(6)ELUA??, but I don't follow the wordplay)

Etas are Japanese menial workers, but what is the wordplay?

etas in retrospect is sate (please, fulfill). If my memory serves me correct Makarios was part of a party called ETA

"eta" is a letter of the Greek alphabet - Makarios is Greek - qed

and on second thoughts the party was eoka and not eta !!

I like your reverse etas to give sate, meaning to please, but I can't find a Makarios reference to ETA (of course Basque separatists call themselves ETA). The only initials I found were EOKA which was in favour of ENOSIS, ie union with Greece!

AJT is right! Clues that start "In Glasgow..", for example, often mean a Scottish word is the answer.

Eluate - the only part of the wordplay that I understood was ate - took in.Eluate is the purified liquid, but where the "elu" comes from I couldn't find.

clutching at straws here...but a membrane is part of a cell..whats inside = EL then U Ate...I will now retire from this thread !
