3 down. River Tapti in the middle probaly is! (4 letters) D-E-
Looks like it might be DEEP but I can't explain the refernce to Tapti. Any explanation?

The river is 'dee', tapti in the middle is 'p', and the River Dee probably is - deep.

8 down - we have guessed the answer to be 'Smell a rat' but cannot see how this answers the clue - can you explain it for use?
