I've got several clues where I don't understand the wordplay.

Can someone give me hints for 1D and 7D?

Thanks

Demeter
1d h hour ton fashion pie confusion (e is superfluous)

7 d hackers is the definition; three-letter acronym for a program architects use around "rt", (d is superfluous)

Ha, meant "hackery" not "hackers"! Had one eye on Croatia v Portugal!

This is taking far longer than it should. My ancient eyes spotted the thematic answer at 1D long before I solved the clue, so I rubbed it out and reinserted it hours later when justification dawned. The one isolated letter clash is easily resolved, but the 6A "feature" eludes me. Since the other clash resolutions lead to real words everywhere I assume this does too but the 4 possibilities lead nowhere that seems relevant.

All this and an unresolvable mistake (if such it be) in today's IQ. Still, Wales won, which is something.

I'm rather behind some of you. Stuck on 22a, 29 a and 20d. I've got the last two words of the instruction, but no other coherent parts of the message.

1d seems clear, but I can't parse the second half of 24d.

22a: abbrev. for 'baron' + word for concocts (C is extra)
29a: a famously besieged city + word for 'further' with last letter omitted. (T is extra)
20d: a former university + abbrev. for extreme pressure (E is extra)

24d: a gig is a type of boat.

I've got what looks like a complete satisfactory grid, except that I can only find 4 clashes: One in 1A, two in 6A, and one in 22A.
Where's the 5th?

Demeter, it's as I thought. There are 2 clashes in 1D, 2 clashes in 6A and the remaining clash is at 22. A little underwhelming really, unless it was the setter's intention to add the intermediate answers of 1D and 6A to the list of things not vital...

Ah yes, of course. I did have the 2nd clash in 1D, but I was ignoring it, having already changed 1D to the essential feature.
