Hello I need some help solving some cryptic clues, I know all of the answers are UK place names but it hasn't seemed to have helped!

A small selection:

1. Left for warmer regions about the opening of Manhattan island. (10).
2. Lidless container for five hundred dreaming spires. (6)
3. Light blue Scotsman going up to his spouse about Glasgow initially. (9).
4. Sounds like the result of female missionary meeting cannibals at Milby? (8)
5. Doctor of History starts South African return journey with Simpson’s other half. (7)
6. Headless ghost grabs both hands and at first Coleridge was interrupted. (7)

It is definitely a crossword!

7. Memory stage-managed by the port. (8)
8. Welcome to old city in bloody ends of stoned village. (7)
9. Tales about ruby nectar. (10)
10. Essex town that lies about unknown newspaperman. (7)
11. Used to be a beheaded rocky saint in Devon. (6)
12. Interpretation of a dent following an embarrassed introduction. (7)
13. Plain surrounded by floods in Kent. (9)
14. Unlikely scene of “Song for the Hatless” .(6)
15. Donald Campbell started and finished under his car here? (5)
16l Could be OK on the map of Devon. (10)
