Please help with two crossing clues which appear to be inconsistent with each other.

16A. Something representative (6) S?M?*?

12D. Recently given birth to (7) N?W?*?N

The expected answers are 16. SAMPLE and 12. NEWBORN but, as you can see, they interfere with each other. I have used * instead of ? for the intersection letter of the two answers.
