I've been staring at this last clue for two days and just can't get the parsing

34a Proof relating to the enclosure shows little error in text (4,2,3,3)

S*I* O* T*E *E*

I think it's slip of the pen, but I can't figure out why! enclosure = pen but where does proof come from? It's driving me nuts!!

Thank you.
