The first part must be swift (Dean Jonathan Swift), but lost on the last half. Old books = NT perhaps.

The "I" looks wrong, (O (old) + OT) in fed, footed.

Old is O, books are OT (Old Testament) took courses is FED all together makes FOOTED

47 Across is COGNOSCENTI which gives you the first O in footed
