Thanks brackendale - hadn't occurred to me that gout here is French for taste

Gout is in Chambers meaning taste so it's a fair clue.

Can anyone help with parsing of 18 down please? I have L_f_l_E and it seems to be an obvious means of survival - but what it has to do with cats dropping on cats I have no idea! Also I have a dog which fits nicely into 6 Down but why???
