50D Running on this when exhausted, one's a dead man (5). E?P?Y. Must be "empty", but what's that got to do with "one's a dead man"?

i think an empty bottle is sometimes called a dead man? not totally sure about that.

Brewer's has Dead Men as the British version and Dead Soldiers as the US variety - so I'd say you were right first time, Trevor!
Brewer's adds, 'When the 'spirit' is out of the bottle, it is dead'.
