Thanks for the explanation(and JIMC's),sorry I cast doubt on your solution. Isn't ignorance wonderful!
I have enough trouble with ordinary puzzles,something like this could easily push me over the edge. I can't imagine trying to do it after a few drinks.

Thanks to all posters, and especially GRM for being first to spot "NESIOT" and "NESIT" which has to be the correct answer.
To everyone else I encourage you to give Azed a try, if you have a perverse liking for fiendish twists like this one.
